Summary
[edit]DescriptionAllendale Theatre upper level and roofline, Buffalo, New York, April 2015.jpg |
English: The Allendale Theater stands sentinel over Allen Street in the historic Allentown section of Buffalo, New York, as seen on a sunny afternoon in April 2015. Built in 1913 to a design by the firm of Leon Lempert & Son, the Allendale differs from other theaters of the era in both its architecture (a simpler yet still elegant Renaissance Revival aesthetic, as opposed to the Neo-Baroque ornamentation of Shea's Buffalo and similar) and the history of its usage (it was better known for putting on theatrical performances and serving as rented home to a variety of independent entertainment businesses, such as Isadora Duncan's Dance Company; its programming did not become dominated by motion pictures until the 1920s). It operated as a theater until the early 1980s, by which time it was in a dilapidated condition and reduced to showing second-run, exploitation, and pornographic films, before being shuttered completely in 1983 after the marquee in front of the building famously crashed down onto the sidewalk below. Theater of Youth, the building's current owner, purchased the building at a 1985 foreclosure auction, restored it, and reopened it to the public in 1999 with a slate of programming that focuses on youth-oriented theatrical presentations. Seen here on the building's upper story is some of that aforementioned Renaissance Revival detailing: a quintet of multi-light windows, standing above where the marquee was once situated, are topped consecutively with flat arches and bling round arches, each adorned with keystones and the latter with circular relief patterns in the tympana decorated with a floral motif. A projecting cornice and shallow-pitched pediment with additional Classical ornamentation figure above, and cut-stone quoins flank the projecting central portion of the façade at each side. |
