Summary
[edit]DescriptionAllendale Theater, Allen Street, Allentown, Buffalo, NY - 52640925464.jpg |
English: Built in 1913, this Renaissance Revival-style building was constructed as the Allendale Theater, which originally featured a 900-seat auditorium, and serving as a neighborhood movie theater until 1958. The theater became an adult cinema between 1965 and 1975, returning to use as a neighborhood theater in 1976. The theater underwent a major restoration at the turn of the millennium, reopening as a live performance venue in 2000, presently home to the Theatre of Youth Company. The building features a buff brick exterior, terra cotta trim including a bracketed cornice with dentils, a decorated front pediment with a cartouche, festoons, and an acroterion at the top, Palladian windows at the two outer bays of the second floor with friezes containing festoons above, rosettes above the pilasters between the five central arched bays of the second floor, which feature basket weave pattern brick in the blind arches above the windows, twelve-over-one double-hung windows on the first floor, quoins at the corners, doors with stained glass transoms in the middle of the first floor facade, and a parapet clad in copper above the cornice, obscuring the low-slope gable roof of the auditorium. The building is a contributing structure in the Allentown Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980. |
