Summary

[edit]
Description This house on Allen Street in Sylva is very similar in size, style, and form to the Nichols House and Hooper House, but, due to its location, it has seen much less interest from the local community in its preservation or historic value, even though it does have a lot of historical value as one of only a few Victorian-era homes left in the town. The house, with an incorrectly listed build date of 1950 (most likely dates to around 1900), sits in a portion of town known as College Hill, named after the old Jackson Academy and Sylva Collegiate Institute, two private high schools that once operated in the center of the neighborhood. It has been stripped of much of its wooden ornamentation, if any existed to begin with, and, though it retains its original windows and siding, has not been really given the attention it deserves. Unlike the other two houses, it sits in an out-of-the-way location that has become poorer over time and gotten a bad reputation for being close to the paper mill and having a lower-income population. However, I do see some positive elements in the neighborhood, and I would hope that the handful of lovely Craftsman and Victorian homes that hold some of the highest historical value in town can be retained and restored, rather than rehabilitated in a way that removes their historical character, as has been happening to many homes on Hampton Street in the neighborhood that are being “modernized” with new windows, enclosure of front porches, and vinyl siding.
