y: CATSKILL Our Sales Leader Catskill remains the "King of All Strawberry Varieties" judging by our custo- mers, who really are the ones to know. The virus free stocks, which brought the return of the original vigor of Catskill, make yields of from ten to fourteen thou- sand quarts per acre not uncommon. Catskill is popular for many reasons. 1. Adaptation. Catskill is well adapted to all the northern states and the higher altitudes as far south as North Carolina and westward beyond the Mississippi River. 2. Berries. Catskill berries are of large size, moderate firmness, good quality and very attrac- tive appearance. (See color picture inside front cover.) 3. Hardiness. Catskill has an amazing record of producing successive crops of fine fruit. It has been a sure thing over a long period and we consider it one "must" berry for growers in the upper middle and northern states. 4. Productiveness. Catskill has more nice large size fruit and gives a greater total quantity of berries than any other equally productive variety. 5. Use. Catskill berries are fine for the fresh market and quite acceptable for freezing. They cap easily, which is quite important where capping machines are in use. 6. Bonus. Catskill carries a higher than average percentage of Vitamin C of which strawberries are one of the best sources. In addition, Catskill berries will stand wet weather at picking time better than other varieties which are actually firmer. CATSKILL COMMENTS Maine—Lincoln Co., Aug. 23, 1965. "I lived in Baltimore, Md., for 21 years and in 1955 I wanted to establish a strawberry bed here, and where do you think I got 25 Catskill plants? Why from Allen's of Salisbury, of course. I still have two little beds from runners, one producing and one coming. Usually get about 65 quarts for our use and to give to friends—big berries of wonder- ful flavor. Thank you, Mr. Allen, for having such fine strawberry plants—a firm with real integrity." Miss E. M. Geraghty. Kentucky—Campbell Co., Jan. 14, 1965. "I have not forgotten how wonderful you all were last year in sending 100 Catskill plants even after I was so late ordering. If you could see this patch of Catskill you would be glad you did. They are beautiful. All things being equal I should have swell berries come May and June. The others I ordered last year were equally good, the Pocahontas, Fairfax, Midland all look fine, but I believe the Catskills will be my pride and joy and heart's delight." Miss Marie G. Kroger. Minnesota—Hennepin Co., Feb. 14, 1965. "The berries I got from you a couple of years ago were just wonderful. I believe every plant grew. The Catskills were the best berries we ever had." Willie W. Klein.
