Summary
[edit]DescriptionAllard Pierson Museum Palmyra Loculus relief 7665.jpg |
English: Loculus relief decorated with a bust of a woman. She is shown frontally. In the Palmyrenian Aramean inscription on the right of the relief we read “Qubûdâ daughter of Malê Mattanal. Alas!” She wears three head covers: a band around her head, a turban and a cloth that is also draped over her shoulders. The almond-shaped eyes with heavily set upper eyelids are striking. She is wearing a tunic over which a cloak is draped that is secured to the left shoulder with a large pin. In her left hand she holds a spindle and a distaff that were used for spinning. Limestone, 135-150 AD. On loan from the Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek Copenhagen. Inv. Nr. I.N.1078. A note further explains that the Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek Copenhagen holds the largest collection of Palmyrene burial sculpture outside Palmyra. And: probably the reliefs in ancient times were colourfully painted.
Kalksteen 135-150 n. Chr. Bruikleen uit de Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek Copenhagen. Inv. Nr. I.N.1078. |
