Allard Pierson Museum Domitian as pharao

Summary

[edit]
Description
English: In Egypt the Roman emperors take control of the temples as a way to get a grip on the administration of the province. In their role as kings of Egypt they worship the Egyptian gods. Here we see the Emperor Domitian as a traditional pharaoh, standing in the false door of a temple. He is handing a statuette of Ma’at, goddess of justice, to the sun-god Re-Horachti. The Greek griffin above stands for Nemesis, goddess of cengeance, with her wheel of fortune. Religious sambols from three cultures are united in one image. Limestone, Egypt, c. 83-96 AD (inv, 7764)
