From : Alan Stanton, Tottenham Hale ward councillor To : Haringey Environment Department; cc : Lyn Garner, Director, ward councillors Tottenham Green; Seven Sisters; Bruce Grove; Tottenham Hale. Sent : Tuesday, September 13, 2011 6:49 PM Subject : Waste and barriers left on Tottenham Green

This is to confirm my telephone conversation earlier today [ ... ]

I was told that the stacked orange barriers which I reported in May 2011 were due to be removed in June. They were still there on 10 September. Please see my photos here.

Tottenham Green Under Fives Centre continue leaving their waste bin on the path. [I was told] they have a Wednesday waste collection. On Saturday 13 August when Cllr Bernice Vanier and I did our advice surgery, either the Centre - or perhaps someone encouraged by their bad example - had left chairs and other rubbish on the path next to their waste bin. Please see my photo here.

Recently the recycling bins which were previously in front of the former Town Hall have been moved onto the Green. Please see the photo [above]:

It seems to me that in such small steps, each one insignificant by itself, Tottenham Green is slowly being allowed to deteriorate. Instead of valuing and cherishing a local green "jewel" for the whole of this part of Tottenham, problems are either unnoticed or go unreported.

If, for over a year signs are left for an agency which has moved away, am I the only one who spots this?

Two years ago, rough sleepers were using the substation building as an outdoor latrine. It seems that nobody else reported this.

In my view, nobody should be using the Green or its paths to store waste; or recycling bins; or traffic barriers. Or anything else. If nearby organisations and our own staff and contractors see it as a bit of waste ground suitable for storage or dumping - or worse - that's what it will become.

I am copying this email to Ms Lyn Garner the Director. This is because I am suggesting an overall approach which may be more effective than responding one-problem-at-a-time, for example by clearing waste or starting enforcement action.

Suggestion for Ms Garner: A Tottenham Green Neighbours' Agreement

In a nutshell, I suggest we invite all the organisations, residents and traders who "front" on Tottenham Green to discuss and sign-up to a public agreement about how they will help to value, cherish and try to improve this beautiful green open space. With an agreement about what they will and will not do.
