What are the first symptoms of measles ? They are so like those of a cold in the head that anexperienced physician can not tell the difference. Thenose runs, the eyes weep, and there is sneezing andusually some cough. There is no eruption until thefourth day. Prior to this the child seems ordinarilywell, except for the cold. There is sometimes a slightfever, but not always. How does measles differ from scarlet fever ? There is usually no sore throat with measles; andthere is no catarrh with scarlet fever. The child issleepy and dull, slightly feverish, but usually not ill

No. 12. MEASLES.(See Page 316.) MEASLES. 317 enough to go to bed. As the disease advances, how-ever, the fever increases, and by the fourth day it maycarry the temperature to 102 or 1030 F. At this timethe characteristic rash appears, and differs from thatof scarlet fever in being coarser, more scattered, andpurplish in hue rather than scarlet. The eruption con-sists of flattened papules, slightly elevated above thesurrounding skin, and about the size of a split pea.There is a tendency for the rash spots to run together,so as to form a crescent-shaped blotch. The eruptionappears first upon the face, but spreads over the entirebody in about twenty-four hours. The cough, whichwas among the earliest symptoms to appear, continuesduring the eruption, and it is the last symptom to dis-appear. The rash remains visible about four days, andfades away in the same order in which it came.
