All Saints Stuston: busts
Description Monument in chancel of All Saints Church, Stuston, Suffolk, to Sir John Castleton, 3rd Baronet (1644–1705), of Stuston Hall, and his wife Bridget Read, a daughter of Thomas Read (d.1652) of Bardwell, Suffolk (see his monument in Bardwell Church[1]). He died without surviving issue. Inscribed: "In perpetual memory near here are placed Sir John Castleton, Bart and Lady Bridget formerly his wife and very recently the widow and relict of that man. And also three of their children born to them, Charles, John and Elizabeth. This marble a pledge of faithfulness and love. The said Bridget laid down in her will that this should be set up in the year of grace 1727. The righteous will be held in lasting memory". Busts of him and his wife with relief portraits of their three children who predeceased them. Arms of Castleton (Azure, on a bend or three adders nowed vert) (Burke, Sir Bernard, The General Armory, London, 1884, p.176, or lampreys azure) impaling Read (Gules, on a bend argent three shovellers sable) (Burke, p.843, "Reade of Lincoln" / "Wenburie, Devon") (shovellers = ducks).
