Description

All Saints Parish Church Barrow Suffolk. Monument to Sir Clement Heigham (d.25 May 1634) of Barrow. Shield top: Sable, a fess chequy or and azure between three nag's heads erased argent (Heigham) (Burke, Sir Bernard, The General Armory, London, 1884, p.476 "Heigham of Hunstone Hall, Suffolk, 1577"). Shield lower centre, arms, quarterly of 8: (see Howard, Joseph Jackson, ed. (1868). The Visitation of Suffolke, made by William Hervey, Clarenceux King of Arms, 1561, Vol.2, 1871, p.236[1])

  • 1&8: Sable, a fess chequy or and azure between three nag's heads erased argent (Heigham)
  • 2: Gules, a chevron ermine between three falcons rising argent legged beaked and belled or (Burke, 1884, p.375) (Francis, of Gifford's Hall in Wickhambrook, Suffolk) (Metcalfe, Walter C., ed. (1882). The Visitations of Suffolk made by Hervey, Clarenceux, 1561, Cooke, Clarenceux, 1577, and Raven, Richmond Herald, 1612, with notes and an appendix of additional Suffolk Pedigrees. Exeter: W. Pollard, pp.40-1, stating "falcons displayed" - falcons are usually shown "rising", as per the Burke's blazon[2]) (Burke, 1884, p.375)
  • 3: Azure, a saltire engrailed argent (Teringham) (Burke, Sir Bernard, The General Armory, London, 1884, p.1003)
  • 4: Barry of six argent and azure, on a bend gules three mullets or (Pabenham) (Burke, 1884, p.769)
  • 5: Gules semée of crosses crosslet (argent), three lucies haurient of the last (Lucy) (Burke, 1884, p.628)
  • 6: Gules, a chevron argent between three (escallops?) or a chief embattled of the second (Chamberlayne) (Burke, 1884, p.181-2)
  • 7: Argent, a saltire azure (Tolthorpe) (Burke, 1884, p.1018, but with saltire gules)
    • Shield lower left: Sable, a chevron between three fleurs-de-lis or on a chief of the last three spearheads azure (Wright)
    • Shield lower right: Or, a lion rampant sable (Poley)
The Heigham family originated at the manor of w:Higham, West Suffolk (HIGHAM-GREEN, a hamlet-chapelry in Gazeley parish, Suffolk (John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales, 1870-2)), per Metcalfe, Walter C., ed. (1882). The Visitations of Suffolk made by Hervey, Clarenceux, 1561, Cooke, Clarenceux, 1577, and Raven, Richmond Herald, 1612, with notes and an appendix of additional Suffolk Pedigrees. Exeter: W. Pollard, pp.40-1. Thomas Heigham (d.1480) of Higham married Isabel Francis, [3] one of the daughters and co-heiresses of Sir Hugh Francis of Gifford's Hall in Wickhambrook, Suffolk.
