Summary
[edit]DescriptionAll Saints Church - geograph.org.uk - 1371772.jpg |
English: All Saints Church. All Saints church > 1371735 is situated on an elevation above the village green in the part of the village which was formerly called High Shotesham. Until up to 1731 Shotesham used to have four parishes and there was a church in each one of them - All Saints, St Mary, St Botolph and St Martin. Two of these are still in use, there is no trace left of St Botolph's church and what remains of St Martin is in ruins. All Saints is a large, aisle-less church > 1371797 - 1371831 with a 14th century tower which has an exterior staircase > 1371777 on its southern face, providing access to the ringing chamber. The church was much restored in the 19th century and the stained glass windows > 1371815 date from this time. All Saints retains its C15 font > 1371833 and there are remains of wall paintings > 1371803. Of the screen only the tracery in some of the panels is original. Some of the windows have kaleidoscopic glass > 1371822 which was installed in the 19th century, copied from the windows in Milan Cathedral and unique in this country. This church is kept locked. |
