Description
English: All Saints Church, Mattishall, Norfolk - Ledger stone of John Reppes (1611-1672), who

married Ann Howlet, the daughter of Nicholas Howlet, B.D., Vicar of Mattishall, Norfolk. (Source: Farrer, Edmund, Church Heraldry of Norfolk, Vol 1 (1885), p.313 [1]) Arms: Quarterly of 4:

  • 1&4: Ermine, three chevrons sable (Reppes) (Reppes of w:West Walton, Norfolk (Burke, Sir Bernard, The General Armory, London, 1884, p.847 "Reppes of w:West Walton, Norfolk"), a cadet branch of Reppes of w:Thorpe Market, Norfolk, which bore the same arms. (Distinguish from different family of "Repps of North Repps, Norfolk" (formerly "Rugg") which bore different arms (Gules, a chevron engrailed between three mullets pierced argent [2]). John Reppes of West Walton (2nd son of Henry Reppes of Thorpe Market) married firstly Margaret Smyth, a daughter and co-heiress of Henry Smyth of Walpole in Mershland, Norfolk (See: Rye, W., ed. (1891). The Visitacion of Norffolk, made and taken by William Harvey, Clarencieux King of Arms, Anno 1563, enlarged with another Visitacion made by Clarenceux Cooke, with many other descents; as also the Visitation made by John Raven, Richmond, Anno 1613.   • 2: Quarterly or and azure, on a bend gules three crosses-crosslet of the first (Burke, Sir Bernard, The General Armory, London, 1884, p.339 "Falstolfe of Suffolk") (Fastolfe/Falstofe/Falstolfe);
  • 3: Or, a bend azure between three trefoils slipped vert (Smith/Smythe) (Burke, Sir Bernard, The General Armory, London, 1884, p.939 "Smith of Walpole, Norfolk") Smyth of Walpole St Peter (Walpole in Mershland), Norfolk: "The villages of Walpole St Peter and Walpole St Andrew are amalgamated under one parish council, and are now known simply as Walpole. It is very close to the border with Lincolnshire, about ten miles west of King's Lynn, in what used to be called Marshland. The soil is very productive and is intensively farmed.
