[edit]DescriptionAll Saints, Cadney cum Howsham - geograph.org.uk - 428799.jpg |
English: All Saints, Cadney cum Howsham The church of All Saints has an Early English tower and chancel, and a grand Norman nave arcade. The wooden screen is thought to be from nearby Newstead Priory. Old oil lamps hang from above but there is high intensity lighting from spot lamps. The nave is dark but the whitewashed walls of the chancel make it light. The roof of the nave is a lot lower than the original and this probably came about after storm damage to the chancel roof in 1863 (see memo below). The church was restored in 1912 by Sir Charles Nicholson. There is some old writing painted on the wall.
A memo inside a book in the church reads: - "This book was on the Communion Table on Saturday Nov 21st 1863, when a sudden but tremendous storm of wind from the North West and hail, carried off all the lead and a considerable part of the roof of the Chancel of Cadney Church (taking both to a considerable distance) throwing down the key stone of the East window breaking the glass (except the painted at the top) smashing the Communion Table top and beside other damage. The time the storm happened was 6 'o' clock in the evening". Edgar Brown Curate |
