Description All Saints' Church, Mettingham, Suffolk, mural monument to William Gooch (d.1685), Esq., and Thomas Gooch (d.1688), Gent. Arms: Per pale argent and sable, a chevron between three talbots passant all counter-changed on a chief gules three leopard's faces or (Gooch of Mettingham, Suffolk). (Same arms for Gooch baronets (cr.1746) of Benacre Hall, Suffolk, per Montague-Smith, P.W. (ed.), Debrett's Peerage, Baronetage, Knightage and Companionage, Kelly's Directories Ltd, Kingston-upon-Thames, 1968, p.336). "These gentlemen were ancestors of the present Sir Thomas Sherlock Gooch, 5th Baronet (1767–1851), of Benacre Hall in Suffolk, whose family appears to have sprung from this village. In 1537, I meet with the name of Thomas Gooch, as witness to a deed, now preserved in the parish chest".
