Here / from the silence of the "drawers" / from the gagged motherland/ from chests undone by PIDE torture / rose the clamor of freedom / blossomed April". Commemorative plaque on the wall of the former Aljube prison and torture centre in Lisbon. Notes: The "drawers" were the solitary confinement cells, 3 by 7 feet, with no windows, no light and no ventilation, where prisoners were kept between interrogations. PIDE was the political police of the regime. April refers to the revolution of 24 April 1974, which put an end to the Estado Novo regime. The Aljube functioned as a political prison from 1929 to 1965. Conditions there were so atrocious that the proposal to close it came from the political police itself. Google the Amnesty International 1965 report "Prison conditions in Portugal" for detailed information on the political prison system in Portugal prior to the 1974 revolution. |
