ns for the insane for theentertainment of elderly and middle aged ladies from thefarms, of a past generation, than for present day farmlady denizens. These and the quiltings and other similar mutual as-semblages of the housewives tended to interrupt the monot-ony of the farm life and thus to postpone and drive awaymelancholy so common to life on the farm in women. The picture is from an illustrative report with otherphotos of the Spring Grove Hospital for the Insane ofMaryland, by Dr. Percy Wade, Medical Superintendent. We wish other superintendents and managers wouldpresent more special illustrative features of their institu-tions. Such pictures of internal hospital life disarm sus-picion. More or less of it is done by many hospitalswhich we purpose showing from time to time, duringthe present and coming years. This and the following illustrations of insane hospitallife should have appeared to illustrate the authors arti-cle Happy Though Insane in the last May number ofthis magazine.
