Sometimes landforms on Mars are as familiar as Earthly deserts, and sometimes they are...something else. These twisted canyons are found in the Hellas Basin. Mars explorers often refer to this kind of terrain as 'taffy pull.' They conclude that formations like this were exposed when softer rock weathered away to reveal harder substrates--but no one knows for sure what caused the underlying rock to stretch like that.
