L’identification du modèle féminin s’appuie sur un dessin de Jean-Baptiste Wicar, dans lequel on voit Alexandrine de Bleschamp (1778-1855), épouse de Lucien Bonaparte, avec une coiffure en tout point semblable à celle de la femme du tableau ; les cheveux soigneusement arrangés d’un côté de la tête, et dénoués librement de l’autre. Alexandrine porte une robe de velours cramoisi, alors qu'Anna est vêtue d'une robe de satin blanc.

S’il n’est pas possible de déterminer de manière catégorique laquelle de ses trois filles est assise à côté d’elle, il y a tout lieu, cependant, de penser qu’il s’agit de sa fille aînée Anna, fille de son premier mariage avec le banquier Hippolyte Jouberthon, et qui devait se marier par la suite avec le comte bolonais Alfonso Hercolani de Blumberg. Le paysage à l’arrière-plan renvoie à la campagne romaine qui s’étend de Frascati à la Mer Tyrrhénienne, vue des hauteurs de la villa Ruffinella, l’un des nombreuses propriétés du prince Lucien Bonaparte.
