n un giorno di ottobre dello scorso 1849 , cal- cando il Sommo Pontefice Pio IX. il suolo della (vetusta Pompei, che innumeri monumenti offeri- sce da un secolo nel vaghissimo cielo della Campania, un bassorilievo marmoreo veniva fuori dallo scavo apposita- mente fatto, per darne un saggio all'Ospite venerando, fra quanti han fatto invidialo il nostro suolo, inesauribile miniera di ogni antichità, sicché ogni angolo della terra classica che calpestiamo è un vasto museo, messe alle lucubrazioni di uomini dottissimi, di cui non è almanco ingrata questa terra prediletta di Dio , di quel che la è di monumenti. Del quale marmo è mio desiderio parlare, e tentarne l'appartenenza e la signifìcanza. Esso è un quadro della lunghezza di palmi due, on. 1. per palmi due, on. 2., nel- l'alto di un lato del quale gira una cornice non in tutti ri- masta. Sul suo campo presenta un giovane che cavalca un destriero.
