Upon reaching the entrance to the tem-ple, every man had to pass three tests, — one to provehis courage, one to prove his wisdom, and one to provehis truth. He who stood the tests should have theLamp of Truth for his own; but all who failed wereturned into steps before the doorway, each step liftingthe temple farther from the earth and nearer to theheavens. Each one who failed thus made it moredifficult for the next comer to reach the temple.What these tests were no one living knew, for all whohad tried and failed were turned into stone steps, untilat length a stairway of a thousand steps led to thedoor of the temple.
