70 ALBUM GÉOGRAPHIQUE 177. Tourbières : Marais de Rivery (Somme) — La tourbe fut, il y a cinquante ans, beaucoup plus exploitée en France qu'elle ne l'est aujourd'hui ; les tourbières qui ne livrent plus à la consommation que 100 000 tonnes environ, en ont livré jusqu'à 500 000 par an. Le centre d'exploitation de la tourbe est situé aujourd'hui en Picardie, notamment dans le département de la Somme et aux environs d'Amiens. Dans les marais de Rivery, les ouvriers tourbeurs découpent d'abord les sortes de grosses mottes de combustible qu'ils alignent ensuite en tas réguliers qu'ils font sécher. C'est une industrie qui n'est pas sans risque pour la santé, et qui ne donne plus de grands bénéfices, depuis que la houille est facilement transportée au loin, et en cas d'insuffisance, importée de l'étranger.

ITS. Crayères : cratère au bord de u Mvkniî. — 1. exploitation de la craie dont les usages industriels sont assez restreints, mais qui est un produit de notable valeur, s fait surtout en France dans la région champenoise qui en est extrêmement riche. Quelques-unes des plus grandes caves à vins de la Champagne ont été creusées dans la craie. C'est aux environs de Châlons-sur-Marne que se trouvent les crayères les mieux exploitées. A l'avantage d'une craie de bonne qualité, elles joignent celui du voisinage d'une grande voie ferrée et d'une voie de canalisation de premier ordre, la voie de canalisation de la Marne au Rhin.
