Summary
[edit]DescriptionAlbert Memorial, Edinburgh.jpg |
English: It was commissioned to commemorate the death of Queen Victoria's husband. Albert died of typhoid in 1861 aged just 42, leaving the Queen to mourn him for the rest of her life.
It was executed by sculptor Sir John Steell (1804 -91) after he won the commission in a competition in 1865. Steell was knighted for his work in 1876 when the statue was unveiled. The memorial stands 30 feet high on a base of Peterhead granite which was executed by David Bryce (1803 -76) The figures around the base represent 'The Nobilty' by William Brodie (1815 -87), 'The Army and Navy' by Clark Stanton (1842-94) and 'Labour' and 'Science & Learning' by D.W. Stevenson (1842 -1904). |
