Summary
[edit]DescriptionAlbania confessions Christian-Muslim c1900.PNG |
English: This map represents the distribution of Christianity and Islam as a whole, without reference to specific sects in Albania around 1900. Displayed on the modern day districts, except in the cases of the modern Shkodra and Mati districts, which were both split into their (smaller) 1918 districts (Shkoder into Kiri and Shkoder, Mati into Matja and Oheri). Ultimately based on census data (Ottoman and later those of independent Albania) from 1877, 1908 and 1918.
Majority Christian districts are red, while majority Muslim districts are green. Districts where neither faith exceeded 60% of the population are colored yellow. Of these, it is likely that: Vlora and Shkodra (without Kiri) were slightly majority Muslim, Gjirokastra, Permeti and Lushnja were slightly majority Christian, and Erseka and Korcha are extremely hard to tell due to widely diverging census results and the later redrawing of districts. Sources: 1. Gruber, Siegried. Regional variation in marriage patterns in Albania at the beginning of the 20th century. Data ultimately derived from the 1918 census. See here (maps found near bottom): www-gewi.uni-graz.at/seiner/marriage_patterns.html. See also this map: [1], notable as it includes data for major cities as well w/o surrounding country-side (interestingly, it has slightly different data, such as counting Fieri as almost universally Orthodox while in the other version it has a large Muslim minority) . Used for info on Northern and Central Albania. Unfortunately, due to the political instability there, the South was not included in this census, nor were certain eastern regions (Bulqiza, Librazhd, etc.). 2. Vickers, Miranda. Islam in Albania. --Used for Bulqiza (she notes Bulqiza has an overwhelming Bektashi Muslim majority). While this is a 2008 source, I'm counting it for c1900 too, as it's unlikely that Bulqiza would've converted en masse to Bektashism since then. Destani, Beytullah. Albania and Kosovo: Political and Ethnic Boundaries, 1867-1946. --Used for Ottomon census data of the late 1800s and 1908 (also contains the distorted Greek nationalist and later Albanian nationalist-produced figures of South Albania). Note also that Pogradec is called 'Starovo'. Used for Southern Albania 5. De Rapper, Gilles. Religion in Post-Communist Albania. (link: http://hal.archives-ouvertes.fr/docs/00/32/72/00/PDF/de_Rapper_2008_Religion_in_postcommunist_Albania.pdf) --Info on Devoll, a newly created district, as majority Muslim with a large Orthodox minority. It is unlikely that today's demographics are much different from those of that era as there is no evidence of mass conversions since then. |
