| Description |
Compressed air driven locomotive at the former Homestake Mine in the town of Lead, South Dakota. You couldn't use a steam engine in the largest and deepest gold mine in North America, so Homestake Air Locomotive Number 1A driven by 1000 psi compressed air from the "tender" tank (which holds 135 cubic feet). According to the accompanying plaque, the locomotive was purchased in1928 from the H. K. Porter Company of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania at a cost of $7,525 and was in continuous service on the Homestake Tramway hauling ore from the shafts to the mills until it was taken out of service in 1961 The tank was filled from a large stationary air compressor on the Tramway. The air is released via the throttle to the pistons which drives the wheels, similar to a steam engine. Locomotive 1A weighs 27,000 pounds and operates on 22 inch gauge track. Hometake mine stopped production of gold in 2001 and is now the Sanford Underground Laboratory home of the Large Underground Xenon experiment to detect the presence of Weakly Interacting Massive Particles (WIMPS). |
