Summary

[edit]
Description
Magyar: A Ming nevű óriáspanda (Ailuropoda melanoleuca) nőstény koponyája; az Angliában levő Királyi Sebészeti Akadémián.
English: Skull of a female giant panda (Ailuropoda melanoleuca) named Ming donated by London Zoo. The specimen is from the Hunterian Museum at the Royal College of Surgeons of England.

Ming was one of the first giant pandas ever seen in the United Kingdom. In 1938, an animal collector brought six pandas from China to London. Three of these animals were purchased by the Zoological Society of London for London Zoo. The playful cub Ming became a national celebrity at the Zoo and a favourite of photographers like Bert Hardy. The air raids on London meant she was evacuated from the Zoo several times. Ming became a symbol of hope during the Second World War.

Pandas are delicate creatures. At this time, little was known about caring for them. By 1940 Ming was the only living panda in Europe. She died after an unidentified illness in 1944. The Royal College of Surgeons carried out a full post-mortem examination. The top of the skull has been removed to try to determine the cause of death.
