Summary
[edit]DescriptionAigle ravisseur.jpg |
English: The captive Eagle (Aquila rapax) is a diurnal raptor species of the Accipitridae family. It breeds in Africa and tropical Asia where it favors open and dry habitats such as: desert, semi-desert, steppes and savanna. In Benin we meet him in the national park of La Pendjari
The width of its wings is 62 to 72 cm. Its wingspan reaches 165 to 185 cm. Compared to the Steppe Eagle, a closely related species, it is both smaller and stockier, has a lighter plumage, a larger head with a stronger bill base, a lighter iris. The young are lighter in color and take their final coloration at the subadult stage. It feeds on prey captured by other birds, hence its name, but can also hunt. The ravishing Eagles are smaller and paler than the steppe eagles with which they formed a unique species not long ago. Adults are not uniform: not to mention phases, they have plumage that has different shades of brown, from dark brown to light brown. The darkest individuals are the most characteristic in that they display a beautiful tawny shade that is not present in any other species of eagle. The flight feathers and the tail are blackish, stripes and light streaks adorn the wing covers. The lower back is significantly paler than the rest of the livery. The irises are brown, the bill is yellow with a black tip. Females are much larger than males, otherwise the plumage is the same. Juveniles and first-year immatures have less contrasting plumage than their parents: it is very pale, almost whitish, especially on the lower parts. |
