Description
English:
The attitude is similar to the Buddha of the Bimaran casket.
Central portion of a coin of Agathokles of Bactria (Serie 8). A report on this coin is visible in Greek Accessions pp25-27 and the plate is here (Coin No.15). Note : In Osmund Bopearachchi, "Greco-Bactrian and Indo-Greek coins: Catalogue raisonné" Librairie Nationale, 1991. (ISBN 2-7177-1825-7) and this coin Series 8 of Agathocles of Bactria (p. 175) is a bronze coin, (I quote:) with the "bearded bust of Zeus (D) and a female divinity wearing a high crown or a polo shirt, tightly wrapped in a coat, the right arm brought back to the chest under the fabric (B)". The image, Pl. 7, is clear but the coin is worn. Bronze, circular side. Triple unit (average weight 12.60 g. D. 28-30 mm. Caption : Basileios Agathocles. Could this goddess be Hecate who appears on the tetradrachm of this same ruler, or an other goddess?
Silver tetradrachm. Agathocles of Bactria. Zeus of the extended right, holds a statuette of Hecate, herself holding a torch in each hand.
. However Agathocles was the creator of the Indo-Greek, bilingual coinage. And Taxila, capital of the Gandhara, was part of his domain. (Bopearachchi, p. 59.)
