iably there is a series of shocks, of which the first is themost violent. The causes which in past ages have built up mountains andformed valleys, are still at work in exactly the same mannerand will continue, as they have, since the dawn of creation,and the recognition of an earthquake line, merely means thatgeologists have discovered another mountain range in processof formation. The San Francisco earthquake line approaches the Statefrom the northwest, coming from beneath the Pacific, reaching EARTHQUAKE LINES. 89 the mainland near Point Arenas, in Mendocino county, andfollows down the coast; it has probably influenced the shapeof the shore in that vicinity. It enters Tomales bay, in Marincounty, and following that shallow sheet of water to its head,crosses a low divide to the head of Bolinas bay.
