The mirage is almost continuous ; thehorizon appears like a wide sea, and mountains far be-yond the limit of vision are frequently seen reversed in theair as if standing on their summits, while others take theforms of castle towers. Abu Hamed, the terminal point of this desert march,is a small village surrounded by gardens at about a milefrom the Nile bank. Those wishing to proceed to Khartum from WadyHaifa, the limit of the journey by water, must continuetheir excursion on the camel along the banks of the riverwhere it flows through the desolate rocky desert of theNubian province of Batn-el-Hajer, and the date-growinglands of Sukkot and Mahass. After a ride of thirteen daysthe traveller will thus reach the town of El Ordeh or NewDongola on the Nile, an important market and militarystation, a middle point of traffic with Darfur and LowerEgypt.
