aesica brooch (profile) |
||
Description |
English: Incomplete cast copper alloy Aesica-variant brooch, likely another Cornish Type 31 (Bayley, Butcher & Tyacke, 2011), judging from the length of the crossbar, with long narrow wings, and the form of its junction with the bow, at the head where there is a perforation for a stud, and a circular plate bow with a central perforation, again missing its stud. There are two slight projections or knops on either side of the disc plate, which might have held studs, creating a cruciform shape typical of the Cornish Type 31, but the thin and flat plate is not typical of the type. The fantail foot is missing but the break at the foot of the disc is broad and raised so that the rest of the disc is recessed and may have originally held enamel. There is a patch of white material which may be the remains of enamel or tinning, but the surface is pitted and corroded so that any pattern is unclear. The slot for the hinge on the back at the centre of the wings is missing and the hinge, pin and catchplate are also missing.
Hattatt (2000) illustrates similar examples of Aesica-variant and disc bow-and-fantail brooches on pages 311 & 315, Figs.170 & 174, Nos.290 & 819, which are dated from the 1st to the 2nd century AD. Tyacke, Bayley & Butcher (2011) illustrate two similar examples of Cornish Type 31 brooches from Ludgvan in Cornwall and Old Man in the Isles of Scilly on pages 144-145, Fig.11.1, Nos.9 & 11, which are dated from the later 1st century AD. These Cornish brooches appear to be related to the Hook Norton (Hull forthcoming) or Aesica variant types (Mackreth, 1982). |
