Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Historical aerial view dated 1929 of Schule am Meer on the East Frisian island of Juist which is located between Wadden Sea and North Sea. The picture was made from a plane which passed along the southern coast of the rather narrow island. In the background the wide beach to the North Sea can be recognized where the S.a.M. students regularly performed athletics, football (soccer), field hockey and the like. Temporarily it also served as an airfield. The students took a bath in the Sea early in the mornings right after gymnastics in the dunes, not only in spring and summer but until December. Still no student got urged to by their teachers. From the left to the right: Cut-off at the left edge of the picture a light wooden barrack may get noticed which is part of a western annex to the high-roofed brick building named do. This wooden barrack was named mi, while the northern wooden barrack behind the high-roofed brick building was named re. mi contained the natural sciences including 30 sea aquariums plus an apartment for musician Eduard Zuckmayer. do sported two apartments for the teacher families Martin Luserke and Fritz Hafner plus first aid and sickbay of the boarding school. re contained two classrooms which were also used for boxing and dancing classes. The whitish smaller buildings on dos right in the past had been islander's homes which S.a.M. used to house teachers. In the picture's center the compound of S.a.M. got surrounded by four buildings: the main building named Diesseits (The Here and Now) in the north with a high roof and two annexes to the east and the south, the dark residential wooden barrack Jenseits (The Beyond) in the south, the whitish Westfalenhalle (Westphalia Hall) in the east sporting a high chimney/smokestack and Arche (Arch) in the west, the latter a laterally reversed L-shaped brick building with an attic. The main building Diesseits housed an apartment for the teacher family Aeschlimann, rooms for middle school girls, the kitchen and the dining-room in its eastern annex. The residential barrack Jenseits housed about 45 middle school boys and teachers while the residential brick building Arche (L) housed the seniors, a single female teacher and its southern part the apartment of the teacher family Reiner. Its attic housed the senior girls, its first floor the senior boys. So all who graduated at Schule am Meer before lived in the Arche building. Westfalenhalle contained the wash house, bathtubs, showers, washbasins/sinks and workshops like a locksmithery and a carpentry. Its annexes to the north and east contained coal and wood inventory, those to the south other stock. South of Westfalenhalle is the school's white flag post shaped like a Christian cross. It sported the German national flag, then horizontally striped in black-white-red, the Prussian flag, horizontally striped in black and white and the up to nine pennants of the comradeships, of different colors, sporting a logo acc. to their names. After Jan 30, 1933 also the Nazi swastika flag was ordered to raise. South of Arche two wooden buildings for livestock can be recognized, the larger named Olymp. They housed a horse, pigs and poultry. South of it (not on this picture) the boathouse of the boarding school was erected in 1927 to house dinghys and a larger sailboat with engine. The three buildings on the right of the picture are islander's homes, the largest at the picture's right edge includes a café and restaurant named Zur freien Aussicht (= Unhindered lookout).
