[edit]DescriptionAerial Photos Show "Fingers" of Temporary Work Bridge over Yadkin River.jpg |
English: The crews building the new I-85 bridges over the Yadkin River are getting a helping hand from the platforms, or “fingers,” that extend out from the temporary work bridge.
The temporary work bridge runs between the new I-85 North and South bridges, and supports the manpower and heavy equipment needed to construct these bridges. The fingers make a “T” shape with the temporary work bridge as you can see in the aerial photo. By creating right angles, the fingers allow crews to better position the massive cranes needed to dig the holes for the bridges’ support columns and the equipment used to fill the holes with cement. So far, 48 columns have been completed on both the I-85 North and South bridges, with 92 left to go. Four of these support columns form a row between each set of fingers. Once a row is complete, crews remove the finger closest to the Rowan County side of the river where the column construction started and reinstall it at the end of the temporary work bridge. In essence, the first finger becomes the last finger. This repetitive process not only saves time and money, but it is also more environmentally friendly. Crews will continue reusing all 18 fingers until they reach the Davidson County banks of the Yadkin River. |
