These plains are far inland and receive little rain. Thewesterly winds lose most of their moisture in crossingthe Rocky mountain highland. The northern part of the region includes the frozenplains near the Arctic ocean. See Lesson 40. South of the frozen portion are the wooded plains inCanada. The rainfall there is not heavy, but it has timeto sink into the soil, for the hot season is short and thecold ground dries slowly. Snow lies in the forests forseveral months each year.
