Two thirds of the population of theisland are of Spanish descent, but there are many Negroes.Havana, the capital and chief seaport, is one of the great-est sugar markets in the world. There are nearly as many people in the island of Haitias in Cuba. The western half of the island of Haiti issettled chiefly by Negroes; the eastern half has a mixedpopulation of Negroes and people of Spanish descent.The latter outnumber the former. Port au Prince andSanto Domingo are the principal cities of the island. Jamaica and the Bahama islands are peopled largely byNegroes, but there are also many British settlers. Kingstonand Nassau are the commercial centers of these islands. Barbados is a very thickly-settled island belonging tothe British nation. This nation possesses most of theLeeward and the WindAvard islands. France controls afew of them. The Bermuda islands, lying far out in the Atlantic ocean(see maps on pages 25 and 163) belong to the British.
