e. This river carries a large amount ofrock waste down to the Mediterraneansea and there adds to a great delta whichhas been growing for ages. When theNile is flooded, it pours into the seanearly five times as much water as whenthe flood has gone down. The Nile river is about as long as themain stream in the Mississippi basin.The course of the Nile, however, isbroken by rapids or cataracts which The Mississippi river becomes broader and deeper as it flowsonward, but the Nile becomes narrower and shallower in its lowercourse. Can you tell why ? In harvest time on the fertile delta and flood plains ofthe Nile may be seen cotton, sugar cane, rice, wheat,corn and other products like those raised on the Southern plains of the UnitedStates. Cattle andsheep also graze in thepastures of the Nilevalley. The flood plains ofthe lower Nile are oneof the most thicklysettled parts of theworld. greatly hinder navigation. Largevessels can ascend the river asfar as the first cataract, near thetropic of Cancer. Several cara-van routes across the desert lead to the river port of Assouan, below this ^T ^ :: : cataract. There the gums, oil, salt or ivorycarried for hundreds of miles by camels, can beplaced on boats and floated down to the largecities in the delta plain, Small vessels can be hauled over the firstcataract and can then sail up to the second. There are many boatson the river between the upper cataracts. How different is the basin of the Nile from that of the Missis-sippi! One has only a narrow strip of fertile land with widedeserts on either side. The other also has its fertile flood plain,but this is bordered by uplands of wonderful fertility.
