ain is falling on the lower lands. Only small parts of theRocky mountains are forest-clad, but even this light sup-ply is valuable, because thelower lands of this region arealmost treeless, on account ofthe dryness. This deep - worn highlandyields more silver ore thanH; m any other part of our country.Gold is another valuableproduct. The city of Den-ver has had very rapidgrowth because it is in themidst of a great grazing^\ country on the plains and is nearrich mines in the mountains. Northward from the borderof the United States, theRocky mountains are not veryfar from the Pacific coast, andtherefore receive plentiful rain-fall. For a great distance therange is still lofty. Its summitsare heavily snow-clad, and largeglaciers are found on its slopes. The mountains, as well as thelower parts of the highland, are heavily wooded. Owing to the vegetation on the slopes of theRocky mountains in Canada, ore-bearing rocks arenot so easily found there as in our own country. 32 THE SIERRA NEVADA.

The lofty Sierra Nevada rises in steep slopes from theplateau on the east, but descends in gentle slopes to thelow valley plain on the west. Thisrange receives heavy winter snowfallsfrom the storms of the westerly winds. In summer, the rains are not plentiful, because the trade winds then reachfarther north, and storms are fewer. The summer streams from theSierra are fed by the melting snow. The broad uplands of the westslope of the range are heavilywooded. The east slope is drier, and its forests are therefore lighter. Most of the Sierra forests consist of conetrees, — pine, spruce and fir. They supplylumber to the cities and towns in the low-lands west of the ■ range. On the mountainslopes are found groups of the famous bigtrees. Some of these are more than athousand years old and have a height of overthree hun
