On the left hand side of this street is the MitchellFree Library, located in a very commodious building. Onthe ground floor is the public reading room, and on the floorabove is the magazine room, ladies reading room, and studentsroom. The library contains close on 140,000 volumes, andwas founded from a bequest by Stephen Mitchell, who died in1874. On the opposite side of the street, a little furthernorth, is the Stirling Library (40,000 volumes) and theBaillie Institute (10,000).
