Description Dranem, truly named Armand Menard (1869-1935), was a singular sort of figure of the cafe-concert. Playing the perfect idiot, "he created a liberated personality, an outlet from the repression of all that was moral and sophisticated" (Collectioneur, p. 104). Here, in stark opposition to his stage persona, the famous comedian arrives at the theatre, song sheets, gloves, coat and umbrella in hand, looking every inch the consummate professional
