Notes Das früher Adam Elsheimer zugeschriebene Gemälde geht auf eine Komposition Elsheimers in den National Galleries of Scotland zurück, "Il contento", wandelt diese aber – u. a. durch einen spiegelbildlichen Aufbau – ab. Der Darstellung liegt eine Episode aus dem Schelmenroman "Guzman de Alfarache" des Mateo Alemán zu Grunde, der 1599 in Madrid erschien.[1]
