After leaving Waitangi on 21 February, William Hobson, Henry Williams, and Felton Mathew, the colony's newly appointed Surveyor-General, headed south aboard the HMS Herald. On 26 February they arrived at the mouth of the Waitematā, where Williams was sent to William Fairburn's CMS mission station at Maraetai to gather more signatures for te Tiriti o Waitangi. Hobson was also keen to investigate the Waitematā as a site for settlement. However his conflict with Captain Joseph Nias of the HMS Herald had got worse; Hobson ended up hiring a small schooner in order to gain some independence from Nias. Their stressful relationship would lead to Hobson’s stroke of 1 March, and his eventual death two years later. On 4 March, rangatria of Ngāti Pāoa, Ngāti Maru, Ngāti Tamatera (and perhaps Ngaitai) signed the Waitangi Sheet. It was witnessed by Captain Joseph Nias, Henry Williams, and William Fairburn. The exact location of the meeting is unknown, but is was somewhere on the southern shores of the Waitematā or along the Tāmaki river, possibly at Waiarohe, or Karaka Bay. The HMS Herald returned to the Bay of Islands on 5 March so Hobson could recover at Waimate. Above is a marine chart of Waitematā Harbour, surveyed between 1848-1855. It shows the heads where the Herald anchored, as well as other early landmarks of Auckland.
