Summary

[edit]
Description

Political cartoon from collection of Sir Charles D'Oyly, 7th Baronet (1781-1845). Titled: The Adjutants of Patna pay their respects to King Cockatoo. Pen and ink, 5M x 8 in (14.6 x 20.3cm)

Inscribed on lower scroll: 'We the undersigned Adjutants [of] the City of Patna do offer you oh King Cockatoo our sincere congratulations'; and on the upper scroll'Caw! Caw! Caw! Caw!' Provenance: from an album of work by Sir Charles D'Oyly and his circle D'Oyly and Chinnery finally parted company in 1821 when D'Oyly moved from Calcutta to Patna to become Opium Agent of Bihar and subsequently Commercial Resident of Patna. Greater Adjutants (the one holding the lower scroll appears to be a lesser adjutant) were large storks, now an endangered species, commonly seen in Bengal in D’Oyly's day.
