Title
Adjoining fragments of Roman Samian ware
Description
English: Two base and body fragments of Roman Samian ware, probably Central Gaulish, that join to form part of a shallow dish with pedestal base. The fragment is orange with a good proportion of orangey/red slip surviving. The base fragment has a surviving diameter of 64.2mm and is 13.26mm high. Wheel throwing marks are clearly visible on the upper side of the base, which is essentially the inner, flat bottom of the dish. The underneath of the base has a flat bottomed, circular recess that is approximately 11mm deep. Wheel throwing marks are clearly visible and there is no makers stamp.

The other fragment forms part of the body of the dish, but is lacking its rim. It represents approximately one third of the dish circumference. This fragment is decorated with the moulded design of a long tailed hound chasing another, now incomplete, hooved animal, probably a deer. The fragment retains almost all of its orangey red slip and the orange fabric is only visible at the break edges. The break edges are fairly clean, with little wear, suggesting the damage may have occurred in the more recent past. The fragment is 98.04mm long, 69.06mm wide and 7.04mm thick, with a shallow incline. The total weight of both fragments is 137.22g.

These fragments represent a Samian vessel probably imported from Central Gaul no earlier than the 2nd century.
