Español: El tejido adiposo está constituido principalmente por adipocitos, aunque existen otros tipos celulares como preadipocitos, células madre mesenquimales, células endoteliales y del sistema inmune. La adipogénesis es el proceso de diferenciación celular por el cual los preadipocitos, unas células con apariencia de fibroblasto, se transforman en adipocitos. En esta imagen de microscopía óptica con una magnificación 200X, se observan las diferentes etapas de la adipogénesis en adipocitos obtenidos a partir de preadipocitos de grasa humana estimulados con un cóctel de hormonas. En la fase temprana de la adipogénesis, las células comienzan a acumular triacilgliceroles en pequeñas gotas lipídicas que se van acumulando en el citoplasma (gotas lipídicas multiloculares). A medida que avanza la adipogénesis, las gotas lipídicas se van fusionando hasta formar una gran gota lipídica unilocular, característica de los adipocitos maduros.
