Title
Adelaide Observatory Residence
Description

This image shows part of the former Adelaide Observatory complex on West Terrace, Adelaide, demolished to make way for Adelaide Boys High School. The building with the tower was built as the residence of Sir Charles Todd (1826-1910) and his family. Best known for his work on the overland telegraph project, Todd held various senior government positions including postmaster general, astronomer and meteorologist. Jude Elton, History Trust of South Australia, 'Adelaide Observatory', SA History Hub, History Trust of South Australia, http://sahistoryhub.com.au/places/adelaide-observatory, accessed 22 January 2020. The exact date of the photograph is not known. The State Library has dated it as c1883 (B239310). This date places it within the timeframe of the work of South Australian photographer Captain Samuel Sweet, who became known to Todd through his photographs of the overland telegraph work in 1872, but the image is not in the catalogues of Sweet's works.

The image is similar to GN05409, which was taken inside the precinct's fence.
