Title
Adelaide's Central Sandbag Committee with Cart Load of Sandbags
Description

In 1915 Central Sandbag Committees were set up in several states to collect empty sandbags to be sent to Gallipoli for the protection of troops. The Adelaide Committee , which led by the premier's wife Mrs Crawford Vaughan, organised a SOS (Sendover Sandbag Day) on 10 December 1915, on which 'every patriot' was asked to provide a sandbag or a 3d donation in lieu 'for the protection of our men at the front.' The committee collected at least 70 000 sandbags in its lifetime. Sandbag collection stopped in 1916 at the request of army authorities after the evacuation of the Dardanelles Peninsular in December 1915.

The woman dressed in white is very likely Mrs Vaughan. (Register, 19 November 1915, p4, 11 January 1916, p6, 1 March 1916, p5; Express and Telegraph, 25 November 1915, p4).
