Summary
[edit]DescriptionRobert Borthwick Adam House, Buffalo, New York - 20191208.jpg |
English: The Robert B. Adam House, 448 Delaware Avenue, Buffalo, New York, December 2019. Built in 1876, its design is attributed to Cyrus Kinne Porter by some sources (including a January 1989 Buffalo News article), though that's disputed by some other sources. The steep roof and the pedimented dormer windows on the third floor of the house attest to the French Renaissance Revival style. More uniquely, the windows on the second story are crowned with hood moldings in the shape of Florentine arches. The roof is supported by handsome modillions with ornamental roundels between, and the porch, with its lovely Corinthian columns, was extended to the full length of the Delaware Avenue façade around 1920. A titan of the local retail community, Robert Borthwick Adam (1833-1904) was born in Peebles, Scotland, immigrating to the U.S. and settling first in Boston, where he worked as a merchandising apprentice, then in Buffalo in 1867, where the dry goods concern he founded had expanded into the grand Adam, Meldrum & Anderson department store by 1892. "AM&A's" would go on to be the largest and longest-lived Buffalo-based department store chain, enduring until 1994 when it was bought out by York, Pennsylvania-based The Bon-Ton. The Adam House served later as home to the Johnson & Wilkins funeral parlor in the 1920s, was converted to offices in 1985, and was extensively restored in 2002 by current owner TRM Architects. |
