| Description |
English: Ad astra no more This was the main runway at St David's airfield. There were three, the others criss-cross this one forming a letter 'A' shape. The control tower and hangars have been demolished but the surface of the runways has become an important habitat for some rare lichen species.
The airfield was opened in the summer of 1943, one of the eight built in Pembrokeshire between 1939 and 1945. It was part of the Royal Air Force Coastal Command. Halifax bombers were used against U-boats and surface boats on the Atlantic and several were themselves shot down. "In February of 1944 German planes off the Pembrokeshire coast shot down a Halifax returning to Pembrokeshire with only a wheel being found. A few other Halifaxs were written off with crashes on or around St. Davids Airfield. In the last few months of the war a Liberator crashed near Emlych Farm, on the White Sands Road." In the case of strong crosswinds they would load up with bombs but very little fuel, take off and land again a couple of miles away to fill up at Brawdy airfield where the longer runway allowed them to get back into the air.
