Metzgar Label Copy: "These actors are shown in their roles as the six most celebrated poets of the Heian period (7941185) from a play that debuted in Edo in 1831. In this play, the five male poets performed a famous dance with Ono no Komachi, the only female in the group, who was renowned for her intelligence and beauty. Kunisada positioned her at the top and center of this composition.Kunisada excelled in the art of portraiture and group compositions. Each of the six actors has distinctive facial features, and the name of every actor is given in the inscription above.
