Display Artist: Momokawa Choki Display Title: Actors as Okaru and Yuranosuke from Act VII of Chushingura Creation Date: 1798-1801 Medium: Woodblock Height: 24 1/2 in. Width: 4 1/2 in. Display Dimensions: 24 1/2 in. x 4 1/2 in. (62.23 cm x 11.43 cm) Credit Line: "Gift of Mrs. Clinton G. Abbott from the Estate of her father, Mr. William G. Clarke" Label Copy: "After Yuranosuke flung his sword into the floorboards of the veranda and killed the spy who read the contents of the secret scroll, he freed Okaru from prostitution by purchasing her contract from the brothel. Since she too had read the letter, he keeps her with him so that he can control what she does with her knowledge. In an added twist to the story, Okaru had been sold into prostitution by her family to pay for her husbands admittance into Yuranosukes league of samurai retainers. "
