Summary

[edit]
Description
English: A pair of Vanuatu’s volcanoes continued active eruption in the first days of January 2018. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) aboard NASA’s Terra satellite acquired a true-color image of volcanic ash plumes from the pair on January 1 as the satellite passed over the region.

The pair of plumes rise from the more northerly Ambrym volcano and Lopevi volcano. The gray ash plume from Lopevi blows strongly southeast from the cone while the broader plume from Ambrym widens and takes a more sinuous course to the southeast over the South Atlantic Ocean, suggesting that the plumes have risen to different heights in the atmosphere, each encountering different wind strengths.

A red hot-spot sits atop the Ambrym volcano. Such hot-spots mark locations where the thermal bands on the MODIS instrument detect temperatures higher than background. At this location, the hot-spot likely marks a hot lava lake, which is typical of the Ambrym volcano.
